Laser Therapy for Dogs and Cats

Photobiomodulation, or laser therapy, is popular among veterinarians due to its pain-free and non-invasive nature, making it suitable for various treatments. It can alleviate pain and enhance the healing process for conditions such as arthritis, acute and chronic pain, back injuries, strains, sprains, inflammation, edema, and wound healing. Additionally, laser therapy can often reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications in cases of acute or chronic pain, such as with arthritis.

How Laser Therapy Works

Laser therapy works by emitting low levels of light that are absorbed by the body's tissues. This light energy is then converted into biochemical energy, which stimulates natural cellular processes. The process, known as photobiomodulation, aids in reducing inflammation, accelerating tissue repair, and relieving pain.

The photons of light emitted by the laser penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the cells, promoting the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is essential for cellular function and regeneration. This ATP production enhances cellular metabolism, leading to an increase in cell repair and regeneration.

Moreover, this therapy can stimulate the production of endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers, providing relief from pain. Additionally, laser therapy can help to stimulate nerve cells to block pain signals, contributing to pain reduction.

Overall, laser therapy works by promoting natural healing processes at the cellular level, reducing inflammation, and providing pain relief, making it a valuable treatment option for various conditions in pets.

What Types Of Conditions Can Photobiomodulation Therapy Be Used To Treat?

  • Muscle, ligament and tendon injuries
  • Post-surgical and soft tissue trauma
  • Back pain
  • Ear infections
  • Gingivitis
  • Hot spots and open wounds
  • Arthritis/hip dysplasia
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Anal gland infections

Is Laser Therapy Painful or Uncomfortable?

Laser treatment is pain free and very comforting. During the treatment your pet may feel a gentle and soothing warmth, tingling, or no sensation at all. For many pets laser therapy is relaxing.
